One technique that works particularly well to create ambient lighting within a given setting is coffered ceiling uplighting, where the ceiling becomes part of the lighting design. Done properly, it can completely change how a space feels.
This is where precision matters.
Too often, there isn’t enough depth within the coffer to create the intended effect. Without the right amount of space in the coffer, light can’t properly diffuse. Instead of a soft glow, you get sharp, graphic lines that expose imperfections, especially where LED fixtures meet.
This issue occurs frequently with prefabricated ceiling cornices.
They’re great at hiding the fixture, but often too shallow to create that seamless diffusion.
Precision Matters
When it’s done well, the result is felt within the room.
The way in which the coffers is finished makes a difference too. Some designs keep it simple by matching the inside of the coffer ceiling with the dropped ceiling. Others go bold with high-gloss finishes, such as mirror, gold leaf, or polished stucco/Venetian plaster.
Beautiful, but demanding in terms of detailing and understanding how best to work with them. With reflective surfaces, the placement and the angle of the light source becomes even more important...
